Call us crazy, but we think the secret to youthful skin lies in this miraculous 7,000 year-old peat from deep in the Estonian wilderness! Peat is an incredibly rich natural source of complex humic substances that are high in minerals and have one of the highest concentration of antioxidants in the world. A key active ingredient in the Northern European peat used by our newest brand KÄBÏ is fulvic acid, which has been the subject of an increasing number of health and scientific studies.
Here's 3 quick facts you should know about what we think will be the next hot beauty ingredient:
1. The world's most complex and diverse substance
Fulvic acid is a natural compound derived from plant. This amazing substance is basically the end product of nature's recycling ("humification") process of all once-living matter, and is supercharged with an abundance of minerals and nutrients. It contains all of the protective substances from the original plant matter in a refined and highly concentrated form - which, as you can imagine, is fantastic for your skin.
Being an acid, it won't disrupt your skin's natural balance, and is also a wonderful treatment for sensitive skins due to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties (see Fact 3 below).
2. One of the most powerful known natural free-radical scavengers
Free radicals are the number one cause of premature ageing. Fulvic acid has loads of potential as a potent and hydrating anti-ager that can easily penetrate the skin's surface and remove these harmful substances. Preliminary studies have indicated high levels of antioxidant activity, so we're excited to add this ingredient to our anti-ageing arsenal.
2. An effective treatment for eczema, dryness and other inflammatory skin conditions (it's been used in China as medicine since the Ming Dynasty!)
The anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of fulvic acid have been shown in studies to be an effective treatment for eczema and dryness, and other skin irritations such as acne, psoriasis and dermatitis. Although there is an increasing amount of research on this miracle ingredient, you'll most likely still get looks of confusion when you bring up "fulvic acid" during a conversation, but maybe not if you can say it in Chinese! It has long been used for a wide range of medicinal applications in China and in remote parts of the Himalayas (where the people living there are renowned for their amazing longevity and health).
How we're adding this awesome ingredient to our beauty ritual
Peat is an amazing source of fulvic acids and other humic substances, so it's no wonder peat treatments have such a long tradition in European spas. We've only just discovered this miraculous treatment ourselves, but better late than never, right?
After years of research and testing, KÄBÏ has created an all-natural bioactive anti-aging mask using 7,000 year -old untouched peat in Northern Europe (it's 100% organic and extracted by hand, with no added synthetics!).
We've tested this on our own sensitive skins, and can give it a big thumbs up! The slight tingling sensation you get from this mask and flush of colour is just the peat working its magic. According to KÄBÏ, the peat stimulates blood flow, restores skin’s natural pH balance, improves cell renewal and metabolism, and will continue detoxing the deeper layers of your skin for around 30 minutes after you wash your mask off!
KÄBÏ offers two versions of their mask - the original Organic Bioactive Peat Mask and one with argan oil added for extra sensitive skins (Organic Moisturising Peat Mask with Argan Oil). We’ve added these masks to our weekly skin regime, and have also found that they do an amazing job of removing dead skin cells and leaving skin super smooth and balanced.
