For many of us, the first thing that comes to mind when we think ‘protein shake’ is probably a huge guy pumping iron at the gym. We've been upping our daily protein intake as part of our workouts, especially in the lead up to the crazy festive season! Without a shaker or ugly plastic container in sight, here are 3 good reasons why protein shakes can be an easy and effective way to stay fit all year round.
1. ‘Women may actually benefit more from protein than men’
Given the rather macho persona that protein has adopted over the past few years, it may be surprising to know that women may actually benefit more than men from protein intake. According to sports conditioning experts from Women's’ Health, men who participate in a general fitness program often have enough protein in their diet, whereas women often are lacking due to the generally lower quantity of meat in their diet. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that the average woman consumes about 46 grams of protein per day, and more if you’re seeking to regulate weight.
2. Protein powder can help with weight control
We're all probably averaging 2 holiday lunches/dinners/parties a week right now, so we understand it can be tricky to maintain our waistlines as temptation is literally everywhere! Our bodies are all different, but various studies have shown that protein powder has the potential to support successful weight loss, improved body composition and decrease the risk of disease. According to livestrong.com, a study published in in the journal “Metabolism,” - women who used protein shakes as meal replacements over a 16-week trial period lost more than 10 percent of their body weight and 20 percent of body fat.
